I'm sure you have already heard of this but, for heating have you ever looked into a Rocket Mass Heater. Very efficient, uses a lot less wood, and is very inexpensive to make. Check out youtube when you get a chance. I think, from what I have seen of your situation, it will benefit you immensely in cold weather.
I live in Belmont, Wisconsin, if possible and when I am physically able, I would like to visit and see your setup.
